Tragic loss of Pulp bassist Steve Mackey sends shockwaves through the music world.

Steve Mackey, the bass guitarist for the English rock band Pulp, has died at the age of 56. Mackey was a member of Pulp from 1987 to 2002, during which time the band enjoyed a string of hits including Common People and Disco 2000. He joined Pulp after answering an ad in a music magazine seeking a bassist, and quickly became an integral part of the band's sound.

After leaving Pulp, Mackey worked as a producer and musician, collaborating with artists such as M.I.A., Florence and the Machine, and Arcade Fire. He also composed music for film and television, including the soundtrack for the acclaimed 2013 film Under the Skin.

News of Mackey's death was announced on social media by his former bandmate Jarvis Cocker, who described him as "a true original" and "one of the greats". Fans and fellow musicians also paid tribute to Mackey, with many citing his contributions to Pulp's distinctive sound and his influence on the British music scene.

Mackey's death comes just weeks after the death of another prominent musician, keyboardist and composer Chick Corea. The music world has been hit hard by these losses, with many expressing sadness and condolences for Mackey's family and friends.
