Jazz world mourns the loss of legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter at 89

 


Jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter has passed away at the age of 89. He was known for his pioneering work in jazz and his contributions to the genre throughout his career. Shorter began his career playing with famous musicians like Maynard Ferguson and Art Blakey before joining the legendary Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s. He later co-founded the group Weather Report with keyboardist Joe Zawinul, and they went on to release several acclaimed albums.


Shorter's contributions to jazz music were celebrated throughout his lifetime, earning him numerous awards and honors, including 10 Grammy Awards. He was also inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame and the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters.


Aside from his work as a musician, Shorter was also a dedicated educator, teaching at the New England Conservatory of Music and serving as a mentor to many young musicians.
