King Richard, Succession, and Ted Lasso Win Big at 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards

 



The 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony was held on February 26, 2023, honoring the best performances in film and television from the past year. The awards were presented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and were broadcast on TNT and TBS.


The top prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture went to the film "King Richard," which tells the story of Richard Williams, the father of tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams. The film's star, Will Smith, also won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Richard Williams.


In the television categories, the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series went to the cast of "Succession," while the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series went to the cast of "Ted Lasso." Other notable winners included Nicole Kidman for her role in "Being the Ricardos," and Michaela Coel for her performance in "I May Destroy You."


The awards ceremony also featured a number of speeches and tributes to the actors and performers who have passed away in the past year, including Sidney Poitier, Betty White, and Cicely Tyson.


The Screen Actors Guild Awards are seen as an important precursor to the Academy Awards, with many of the winners and nominees going on to receive nominations and wins at the Oscars.
